NPP Product Family Description

The ocean color products available here were made using Level 3, 8 day, binned imagery from SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua. There are two principal products: results from the Vertically Generalized Productivity Model (VGPM) and the Carbon-based Productivity Model (CbPM).

VGPM:

Full description of the VGPM model can be found here:

http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/ocean.productivity/vgpm.model.php

The NPP grids are 2160x4320, SMI-like format. Files are stored in HDF format, gzipped.

For Seawifs-based VGPM NPP calculations, SeaWiFS chlor_a, PAR, and AVHRR sst products are used to compute NPP.

The file naming convention is:
vgpm.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

For Aqua-based VGPM NPP calculations, MODIS (Aqua) chlor_a, PAR, and SST4 are used.

The file naming convention is:
vgpm.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

These files also are collected by year into tar archives, with the file name convention:
yearlyTarWads/vgpm.[m|s].YYYY.tar

CbPM:

Full description of the CbPM model can be found here:

http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/ocean.productivity/carbon2.model.php

The NPP grids are 2160x4320, SMI-like format. Files are stored in HDF format, gzipped.

For Seawifs-based CbPM NPP calculations, SeaWiFS GSM chlorophyll and bbp, k490, and PAR products are used to compute NPP.

The file naming convention is:
cbpm.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

For Aqua-based CbPM NPP calculations, MODIS (Aqua) GSM chlorophyll and bbp, k490, and PAR products are used.

The file naming convention is:
cbpm.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

Both SeaWiFS and Aqua-based CbPM computations use FNMOC MLD ( http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/ocean.productivity/mld.html)

These files also are collected by year into tar archives, with the file name convention:
yearlyTarWads/cbpm.[m|s].YYYY.tar where "m" indicates MODIS Aqua based NPP and "s" indicates SeaWiFS based NPP.

CbPM2:

Full description of the CbPM2 model can be found here:
http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/ocean.productivity/references/Westberry_GBC_2008.pdf

The NPP grids are 2160x4320, SMI-like format. Files are stored in HDF format, gzipped.

For Seawifs-based CbPM2 NPP calculations, SeaWiFS GSM chlorophyll and bbp, k490, and PAR products are used to compute NPP.

The file naming convention is:
cbpm2.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

For Aqua-based CbPM NPP calculations, MODIS (Aqua) GSM chlorophyll and bbp, k490, and PAR products are used.

The file naming convention is:
cbpm2.YYYYddd.hdf.gz where ddd is the start of the 8 day interval.

Both SeaWiFS and Aqua-based CbPM2 computations use FNMOC MLD ( http://www.science.oregonstate.edu/ocean.productivity/mld.html) and nitrocline depth (?).

These files also are collected by year into tar archives, with the file name convention:
yearlyTarWads/cbpm2.[m|s].YYYY.tar where "m" indicates MODIS Aqua based NPP and "s" indicates SeaWiFS based NPP.
